Unhappy with image banks, one generic image after another? Ask David in Kenya for a smartphone picture (or video) of a skater riding your brand in Nairobi city park. David doesn’t need a plane ticket, he lives just around the corner, and he’s also an avid skater.  Need pro material?  Find an Arky (say, Cynthia) who is registered as pro and is also local.  Empower Cynthia and David, empower your outreach. Get a splash page, get research material, however specific you can imagine.

Journalists

Need perspective from sources outside your network? Aviark is a platform of people already willing to capture media for you; be it for data, that any smartphone can capture, or professional material for publishing or broadcast. Connect with consenting, local, ground sources. Request images, video, or audio. A key inspiration for Aviark is the work of Ryszard Kapuściński, who covered major political upheavals through bakers, bus drivers, and people waiting in line.

Ever look for specific material that the library or the web just can’t provide? What about finding that unique, tailor-made source that will set your work apart, elevate it to a singular level. Could it help to have data straight from the source, from someone who has experience and knowledge about what you are studying?  Find what you need from others that are happy to share it, request interviews or images that any smartphone user can record.
Maybe you are the source and you can send!  Respond to requests and capture data pertaining to what you are knowledgeable about. Send it for free, send it for the MWC (*a minimum wage calculator we made.. a way to thank someone for their time), send it for what you feel is fair.

Aspiring photographers / audio recordists

If you are unsure about what to charge for commercial services, check our reference tables for what Pros charge. Aviark is a platform for fair, mutually beneficial exchanges. You know how to edit or grade? Add that to your profile. You are now in a professional marketplace. Make clients happy you exist.

Business

A startup with tons of enthusiasm but with little or no budget? Marketing for any starter in any sector is very important but a major investment. What if you can ask someone to take a photo of your store or product based on the MWC (Aviark’s minimum wage calculator, *see FAQ,) or a professional profile picture? Collaborate with artists or amateurs around the world to get exactly what you’d dreamed of.

Artists

expand_more

Ask another artist to expand your work.  Send your work to another artist.  You’re a graphic designer but have no skills in drawing? Ask an Arky for the drawing you have in mind. You’re skilled in painting?  Answer a request from an American student to make a video of a painting of an old man in a boat, smoking. Ask for / or record… audio samples from a Moog, a glass harmonica, wood pipes.  Ask for detailed shots of wooden joints from a Japanese carpenter, or be the Japanese carpenter willing to share them.

People who just want to make a buck

Have no skill whatsoever in capturing images or audio? Aviark was initially intended as a platform for everyday people to gain or provide basic content where quality is not a priority… information any smartphone could gather. Take pictures of Korean candy brands for a marketing researcher in New York. Take pictures of the river you live next to for a kayaker 50 km upstream. Shoot an interview with a friend’s father (who just so happens to be a politician) for someone studying PoliSci in Uruguay. Record the audio of frogs at midnight for an herpetologist in Seoul. Material that’s data driven does not necessarily need to be in focus or have resounding audio quality. It just needs be clear, and pretty much every smartphone can do just that.

This platform would allow me to request authentic content from anyone anywhere in the world. I find myself browsing the dried-out stock image websites all too often in my current master studies. It would be of great help to me if this platform were to be developed. I feel like this online platform can fill a gap in the current online content development world, because it allows its users to connect across countries and continents. Creativity becomes common ground. It connects. I really enjoy that it promises to support very specific content.

As a music journalist it is sometimes difficult, for example, to be able to submit a press request for a photographer. It would then be useful, for example, to be able to contact someone who can obtain images with his smartphone and/or has a good seat/view. Even if I have to write something about a festival where I am not present, I can contact people attending to take pictures instead of going to stock sites. It ensures that as a journalist I have different images than the rest, exclusively for me. I think it is also interesting in the long term to have a worldwide permanent team to work with as a magazine / online platform.

I can see myself in both roles. As a requester, I can find someone who gives me a solution to a specific demand I can’t get direct access to. As a creator, I get the opportunity to get job offers from everybody around the world, security of compensation for the (artistic) work that is made and a nice way to build up my portfolio with diverse work for international clients.
